Introduction
to DesignBuilder
Date:
Saturday, August 2, 2008; 8am to 5 p.m.
Venue:
University of California Berkeley
Cost: $400 (Students: $200)
The objective of this workshop is to introduce DesignBuilder
to the users and simulators who would like to use EnergyPlus
simulation tool to model energy performance of buildings,
but without the complexities of working with arcane input
file editor. DesignBuilder is the most comprehensive and powerful
graphical user interface for EnergyPlus. This hands-on training
will provide general overview and introduction to building
energy analysis using DesignBuilder. The trainees will learn
to quickly setup a building model, change the building parameters
using components and templates and run the simulation.
Overview
of the Topics Covered:
1. The Basics
- Navigating models,
- Using blocks - block types,
building blocks, component blocks, outline blocks, wall
thickness, connecting blocks, partitioning blocks into different
zones,
- Understanding the templates:
activity, constructions, glazing, lighting, HVAC,
- Creating custom templates
for easily accessing commonly used data sets,
- Data inheritance, loading
data from templates, clear data
- Creating and applying constructions
and materials,
- Glazing and shading systems,
lighting and lighting control,
- ‘Simple’ HVAC
including natural and mechanical ventilation,
2. DesignBuilder Model Geometry (Example CCGT Building)
- Importing DXF files and tracing over DXF floor plans,
BMP
- Use of various drawing tools - Snaps, drawing guides,
protractor, key ins, construction lines, drawing arcs,
- Horizontal extrusions, component blocks etc.
- Changing existing building layouts, cutting and stretching
blocks, moving internal partitions,
- Editing surfaces, drawing windows, doors, vents and holes,
- Visualization, site solar shading, generating rendered
images, movies and reports.
3. Exporting EnergyPlus IDF data for running in EP-Launch.
- Matching zones, surfaces etc with DesignBuilder data
